Born into the New York world of wealth and privilege, Guggenheim spent much of her life in Europe where she was introduced to a fascinating world of arts and letters. Her circle included such luminaries as Marcel Duchamp, Djuna Barnes, Mary Reynolds, and Ezra Pound. Ultimately, Guggenheim became a driving force in modern twentieth-century art, supporting artists in both Europe and the States, and amassing a large personal collection. Married twice, and the mother of two children, she remained an active art patron and personality until her death in Venice in 1979.
Insightful and comprehensive, Gill's work reveals Guggenheim as never before in a book for serious art lovers, art history buffs, and anyone interested in the story of a fascinating woman.
