The Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) are reference values that are quantitative estimates of nutrient intakes to be used for planning and assessing diets for apparently healthy people. Based on analysis of nutrient metabolism and analysis of data related to nutrient requirements and intakes of humans, recommended intakes for each age group -- from the first days of life through childhood, sexual maturity, midlife, and later years -- are proposed. This volume also identifies Tolerable Upper Intake Levels, which, if consumed consistently, may result in adverse health effects. Dietary Reference Intakes represents a new paradigm for the nutrition community.
