The book is organized in seven parts, each consisting of two chapters: Part I covers the field of developmental psychology, including overviews of historical foundations, general theories, and the scientific method. Part II contains two chapters on the genetic and environmental bases for prenatal development, birth, and neonatal development. Parts III-VII each integrate a chapter on physical and cognitive development and a chapter on social and emotional development during specific stages of growth from infancy to late adolescence.
