Description:
Despite the growing number of biracial Americans, little attention has been given to the growing need for a system of classification that accomodates the individuals in this cultural group. The majority of young black/white biracial Americans define themselves racially as both black and white. This transformation of racial identity has challenged the once predominate "one drop rule", which maintained that a person with any African heritage was black. Biracial Americans have yet to be incorporated into the American racial structure. Racial classification forms that the SAT's to the U.S. Census still use do not have adequate categories for biracial people. Most biracial young persons refuse to abide by the categories listed on such forms and often choose "other" or leave the category blank indicating an opposition to the prevailing racial structure and proving the system obsolete.
