Description:
The speed of sound in gases is usually predicted by a simple formula traceable to Newton and Laplace. This simple formula does not provide accurate results at high temperatures and pressures and does not account for the frequency dependence of the sound speed. The purpose of Volume I of this comprehensive Handbook is to provide a method for predicting the sound speed over wide ranges of temperature, pressure, and frequency and for estimating the accuracy of the prediction. In Volume II the predictions are compared to measurements of 140 selected works that were found to meet several qualifying criteria. Volume III addresses the speed of sound in air -- a gas mixture of obvious biological, meteorological, and industrial importance -- and includes a historical background, effect of variability in atmospheric composition, rules for determining the related physical properties of a mixture, and reviews of several experimental works.
