Description: Human rights has become a main feature of present-day international politics. This book is about the role of human rights in foreign policy. In the first (general) part it discusses the question of whether human rights is a concept with universal validity, the policy choices with which governments are confronted, available policy instruments, domestic sources of foreign policy and the role of intergovernmental organizations. The second (specific) part deals with the human rights policies of the United States, the Soviet Union and its successors, the European Community as well as its three most important member-states (France, Germany and the United Kingdom), the countries of the Third World as well as the specific case of the Netherlands. The book ends with a number of concluding observations. The full text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948, is included.
