Description: In Jacob's Way, Reisa Demetri, 17, lives with her grandfather in a small Russian village. Jacob Demetri is a learned man, a teacher of Hebrew and of the Talmud. He is an Orthodox Jew, vitally interested in the Messiah, longing for his coming to the world. In the winter of 1871, the two learn that a pogrom is about to sweep Russia. They sell their small house and flee the deadly pogrom, taking passage on a freighter bound for New York. Arriving in America, the two try to make a living as street peddlers in the Jewish section of New York city. The competition is fierce, so the two become back peddlers, going on trips as far as New Jersey. In response to a dream, the two go to the South. When they reach Virginia, Jacob becomes ill, and the two are taken in by a pair of ex-Confederate soldiers, Sam Hill and Phineas Long. Sam is a devout Christian and Jacob begins to learn of Jesus through their studies of the Bible. As the story unfolds, Ben Driver, a man Reisa found in the road when he was very ill, determines to regain his honor and to become a man worthy of having Reisa. He and Reisa undergo tremendous struggles to find their way -- Reisa to the Lord Jesus and Ben to regain his place in the world.
