5 1/2" X 9 1/2" 337 Pages Indexed. Collier Books repritnt of a 1964 copyright. Five inked lines of a gift inscription on first title page. No other marks or stamps to this tight book with a faultless interior. James Beard was a vast man with a brilliant mind and vast amounts of information and experiences stored in a brain that seemed to forget nothing, not a telephone number, a name, the direction through streets long unvisited, the flavors of a dish eaten last week or fifty years ago, the intonation of a singing voice on an opera stage thirty years before, a recipe once made, a bit of arcane food lore gleaned from a two-hundred-year-old book, and the birthdays and minutiae of his friends and acquaintances lives. He was born in Portland, Oregon, around the turn of the century and grew up and went to school there and spent summers at Gearhart, a nearby beach community. Although he later lived in many parts of the world, made ew York his principal home, and, in his last years, spent an ever greater part of the year in San Francisco, he returned as often as he could to Oregon to teach and see friends. He was a world traveler: in pursuit of a career as an opera singer; for the United Seamen's Service during World War II; and for pleasure, of which a great part was eating. When he finally decided on a career in food, first as a caterer and later as a consultant, author, and teacher, Jim came home to a world naturally his own, one in which he became famous and loved. An early television program, "Elsie Presents" and a radio show, as well as benefit and television programs all around the country, made him the best-known food name in America. He loved to perform. His weekly newspaper column was carried all over the country. It must also be said that he and his photograph were prominently featured in massive advertising campaigns. He wrote more than twenty books, several of which were best sellers.
