Description:
Originally published in 1702, and followed by an expanded edition in 1736. Torres's work was the first in Spain to deal specifically and completely with thoroughbass accompaniment at the keyboard. It was also a pioneering work for its treatment of what Torres describes as the "rigorous Spanish style": the Reglas Generales approach thoroughbass from a contrapuntal as well as a harmonic perspective. Unlike the writers of guitar treatises of the same period, Torres considers chord inversion and voice leading in the realization of the bass.
