1983 reprint. Gently read vintage hardcover in excellent condition. No dustjacket (as issued? ); glossy pictorial cover. NO writing, highlighting, or dog-eared pages. Corners are sharp and square. Nice, tight binding. The mammals of Africa south of the Sahara comprise the most important and spectacular fauna on earth. This is the first illustrated guide to all of them (save only bats and the smallest, generally nocturnal, species). There is a full description of every species, with measurements and details of form, colour, markings and comparison with similar species. For each species are also given its various names, notes on its habitat, behaviour and habits-feeding, breeding, calls, social habits, migration, enemies-on variation within the species and the points distinguishing principal groups or subspecies. There is a distribution map for every species in the book (except the Swamp Cat). Every species is accurately and beautifully illustrated-six in line drawings, all others in colour plates (illustrating 233 species). These have been done specially for the book by Pierre Dandelot and use the famous Peterson indentification system, with bars to indicate important characters and explanatory notes opposite each plate.
