Where much previous scholarship has relied on an abridged edition of the Dialogues, Anne D. Hedeman returns to the complete, original manuscripts to present a fresh view of Salmon's purposes. The first version, she suggests, held out hope for the king's complete recovery and so counseled him on ruling wisely. The second version, reflecting a changed political situation and a failure to find a cure for the king, expands its audience to include the future governors of France. A treat for the eye as well as the intellect, this volume is illustrated with illuminations from the manuscripts, including nine color plates.
