On February 1, 2002, ABC's 20/20 aired a one-hour piece on effective parenting, featuring Mac Bledsoe. Mac isn't the typical kind of guy you see giving parenting advice on national television, . He doesn't have an advanced degree in child psychology and, until now, he didn't have a book to his credit. His expertise comes from 29 years of teaching high school and coaching sports. Over that time, Mac and his wife Barbara developed a parenting curriculum called "Parenting with Dignity" that is aimed at sending parents the following message: Whether we like it or not, our children will make all of the most important decisions in their lives on their own; so, as parents, the only thing we can do is teach them how to make good decisions." In Parenting with Dignity, Mac urges parents to rethink their approach to discipline -- to let kids make some of their own decisions, and experience the consequences early on, so that they can act responsibly when left alone, and become more independent when they grow older. Parenting with Dignity is derived from Mac's successful nine-tape video series and newsletter of the same name. The book will feature a foreword from Drew Bledsoe and will be released in time for a tentatively planned 20/20 follow-up with Mac Bledsoe airing in the fall.
