Description:
Don Robak, a longtime criminal lawyer, is giving up his career as an advocate. Badly wounded six months ago in a courtroom shooting and left by his wife and son, Robak has lost some of his zest for lawyering. Also, in six months' time, he will take the bench as a new circuit court judge. As a favor, however, Robak agrees to take on one last case. Bertha Jones, a local herbalist reputed to be a witch, is accused of poisoning her teenaged niece and nephew, and Robak, who is "death penalty qualified", is brought in to assist the defense. Robak quickly discovers that the niece and nephew were closely tied to an evangelist church - a church that has already tried his client in its own version of common-law court and condemned her to death. As Robak quickly discovers, Reverend Allwell, the head of the church, has his own unsavory past and resents the intrusion of Robak into the speedy conviction of Bertha Jones. And the further that Robak digs into the background of the case, the more it appears that this could well be Robak's last.
