Barker provide documentation and commentary for each work, placing it within the context of each artist's development and connecting it to contemporary artistic trends and innovations. They discuss how in each instance the artist is eager to present the natural world in as vivid a way as possible, and how the artists' fervent treatment of nature and human life, frequently in a fluid, cursory style, was intended to elicit a heightened response from the viewer. The ancient world was left behind for the immediacy of the present: nearly all these artists were alternately damned and praised for their modernity.
