Description:
This volume of essays seeks to offer the foundations for a radical reevaluation of our preconceptions about the early modern English social order. Its rationale is based largely on one fact: the majority, perhaps as many as seventy percent, of the people who lived in early modern English were neither very rich nor very poor. The reevaluation is necessary because, despite this fact, a disproportionate amount of historical thinking and writing has been directed towards precisely those groups, the aristocracy and gentry, on the one hand, and the poverty-stricken wage laborers, on the other, who made up the remaining thirty percent.
