The FBI files on the subject of Unidentified Flying Objects, contain letters to and from the Bureau on the subject of individual sitings, over many years. Compiled and printed together, they make one of the funniest and idiosyncratic pictures of American life in the post war years. This book is Science Comedy, on a sophisticated level.
"At 11:55 p.m., July 11, I took a phone call from X} of the Laurel, Maryland, Police Department. Sergeant X} said that he had examined the "flying disc." He said that it had been made from a Gulf Oil sign and the top of a garbage can and had been painted with aluminum paint. It had been recently painted because the paint was still wet. Attached to it were a dry cell battery, a flashlight bulb, some wires and a buzzer. He asked if the Bureau was sending anyone out to look at it. Told him that we were not, that we had referred the matter to the army, and suggested that he call them."
