A lengthy introduction describes commands, macros, conditionals, environments, and diversions. Detailed explanation has been an overriding principle, and consequently the preliminary material may seem formidable. It is possible to format text without knowing any of it but it may be helpful to peruse some of it. As a reference manual there are extensive appendixes, and supplementing alphabetical lists of commands are lists arranged by function. So you don't have to kow what the command is in order to find it. The vocabulary is close to that used inn the various Bell Laboratories manual and tutorials.
