Description: The White Witch casts a spell over the land of Narnia, ensnaring Edmund, and drawing Susan, Peter, and Lucy into Narnia too, where they join the great lion Aslan's struggle to break the witch's enchantment. Lewis felt that the Narnia series ought to be read in the following order: first, The Magician's Nephew (1955; 1970; pap., 1986), in which young Digory and Polly borrow his sorcerer-uncle's magic rings and are transported to Narnia, just as Aslan is singing it into existence. Many years later, four children exploring the now-elderly Digory's house stumble through a magic wardrobe into Narnia, in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (1951, 1983, pap., 1986). In The Horse and His Boy (1954; Carnegie Medal Commended Book, 1954; pap., 1986), two children and their talking horses flee into Narnia: Shasta to escape imprisonment and Aravis to avoid an unwanted marriage. In Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia (1951; pap., 1986) Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter help Aslan save Prince Caspian from his murderous uncle and restore him to the throne of Narnia. In The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952; pap., 1986), Edmund, Lucy, their cousin Eustace, and Prince Caspian sail to World's End aboard the Dawn Treader, in search of seven missing noblemen. In The Silver Chair (1953; pap., 1986) Aslan sends Eustace and Jill on a quest to free King Caspian's missing son, Prince Rilian, from an enchantment, and bring him back to Narnia. In the final volume of this series, The Last Battle (1956; pap., 1986), Aslan calls on all creatures who believe in and love Narnia to return for the final battle against the forces of evil. The Last Battle won the Carnegie Medal, 1956. Outstanding Quality.
