Illustrated with photos in the text and with an additional section of stills from Karloff's films 1916-1972. Biography of actor Boris Karloff, authored by one of his closest friends of over 35 years. Though one of the most famous and recognizable actors of his time, he was a private, even secretive yet much loved man in his personal life. He emigrated from his native Dulwich, England to Canada as a young man, working hard, physically demanding jobs (ditch digger, coal shovler, horse trainer) before joining a small travelling stock theater groups in British Columbia and the American north. His first job in Hollywood was as a walk on in a silent fiilm in 1916. His big break came in 1931 in Howard Hawks' "The Criminal Code"; soon, his distinctive height and face won him a job spurned by half a dozen actors (including Bela Lugosi) who were disinclined to have their faces covered by heavy makeup---that of The Monster in Universal's "Frankenstein". The iconic role catapulted Karloff to world fame and a prolific career that encompassed more than 160 movie and stage roles. As biographer Lindsay worked with the full cooperation of the Karloff family and many of his friends, there is much previously unknown information about hos ultra-secret private life.
