Humanity is expanding out into the galaxy in gigantic, but slow, colony ships filled with long-lived people who are nevertheless in suspended animation for all or much of the voyage. One ship has reached a promising world and begun a colony. Some of the people are awake, some not. But they can't stay if the planet is already taken by aliens.
The story is driven by two mysteries: is the planet still inhabited by the alien race that left the ancient ruins of great cities, and who killed the eminent scientist who was leading the investigation of the ruins?
