This movement was fed by both black and white sponsors and audiences. Art, writing, and music flourished for over a decade, and the lives of many African Americans flourished along with them. This period was called the Harlem Renaissance. Discover the works of James Weldon Johnson, Alain Leroy Locke, Zora Neale Hurston, Bessie Smith, Aaron Douglas, Edward Kennedy ("Duke") Ellington, Langston Hughes, Arna Bontemps, Countee Cullen, and Josephine Baker.
