Description:
The Tatra Mountain Region in Southern Poland, known as 'Podhale' in Polish is one of the most compact and distinctive ethnographic units in all of Europe. It has produced a fascinating folk type, the 'goral' (mountaineer highlander) that has intrigued Polish cultural anthropologists and creative artists alike for many years. 'Discovered' by Polish cultural elites, especially from Warsaw and Lwow in the latter part of the 19th century, the 'gorale' were admired for their courage, agility, physical strength, pride and love of freedom. Their humor and wit expressed in their colorful dialect 'gwara goralska', gave them an additional attraction. This is a dictionary of their language.
