0873512820 The main reason for the 'acceptable' rating is that this is an ex-library copy with usual stickers on spine, a library bar-code on the first page and back cover, the library bar-codes have been crossed through with magic marker. Trade paperback with a laminated plastic cover from the library, 665 pages, Minnesota Historical Society Press / Borealis publishers, 1992 reprint of an 1890 original, ISBN: 0873512820. Title: Dakota-English Dictionary, author: Stephen R. Riggs. Usually ships with delivery confirmation. Where available, a photo of the actual cover has been provided instead of a stock photo. Condition description: as mentioned previously this copy has been laminated with a sturdy plastic cover and has the usual marking of an ex-library copy, that is the main reason for the 'acceptable' condition, it is fully readable, with some mild-to-moderate wear. This dictionary has the Dakota word on the left with an English definition of the word on the right, please note that there is a separate dictionary offered with the English to Dakota definitions, which we do not have available. From the back of the book: The language of the Dakota people was first put into written form by missionaries who lived within and learned from the Dakota community in the Minnesota River valley. Stephen R. Riggs (1812-83) worked with Samuel and Gideon Pond and Dr. Thomas S. Williamson to create a Dakota-English dictionary as well as prayer books and hymnals. The dictionary was first published by the Smithsonian Institution in 1852. This edition returns to print an expanded version of the dictionary published in 1890. A companion volume, an English-Dakota Dictionary by John R Williamson, is also available from the Minnesota Historical Society Press. These two dictionaries preserve the older language and remain the most comprehensive and accurate lexicons available. They are essential cultural and linguistic sources for historians, anthropologists, linguists, ethnologists, and all students interested in the Dakota language.
