The story is that of an anonymous, naive narrator who unwittingly gets involved in a brutal murder, and his ensuing surrealistic adventures. We learn of the scientist/philosopher de Selby (roads --" ... a good road will have character, and a certain air of destiny, an indefinable intimation that it is going somewhere and not coming back from there, " and night --" ... an insanitary condition of the atmosphere due to accretions of black air.")
From an eccentric policeman we get the atomic theory -- "Everything is composed of little particles of itself and they are flying around in concentric circles ... hither and thither and back again. These diminutive gentlemen are called atoms ... they are as lively as twenty leprechauns doing a jig on top of a tombstone" -- and the intermingling the atoms of humans and bicycles -- "Michael Gilhaney ... is nearly banjaxed from the principle of the Atomic Theory. Would it astonish you to learn that he is nearly half a bicycle?"
