Description: Albert Bigelow Paine (1861-1937) was an American author and biographer best known for his close connection with Mark Twain, producing several biographical works on Twain, and editing collections of his letters and speeches. Paine was a member of the Pulitzer Prize Committee and wrote in several genres, including fiction for adults and children, humour, and verse. After working in the photographic business, in 1895 he moved to New York to become a full-time writer, and went on to spend much of his life in Europe. His two works on Joan of Arc were so well-received in France that he was awarded the title of Chevalier in the Legion d'honneur by the French government. This novel first published in 1901 tells of a journey to the Arctic that leads to the discovery of a Utopian 'lost world' peopled by telepaths, combining elements of sea adventure, fantasy/science fiction, and romance. The book includes six full-page illustrations by Swedish-American artist and illustrator Bernard Jacob Rosenmeyer (1870-1943), together with sketches purportedly made by characters in the novel.
