The Checklist was first published in 1978 and provided a transcription of the Witt Index as it then existed. In the intervening twenty-one years the With collection and consequently the Index have grown dramatically -- by more than 50%!
This new 2nd Edition of the Checklist of Painters is a transcription of the Witt Index as it currently exists; it now includes some 66,000 names. The names of these 66,000 artists, their dates, and their nationality (or national school) are reproduced in alphabetical order, in the Checklist.
The Checklist of Painters is probably the more exhaustive work of its kind in existence; it now list all painters (known by art historians) to have lived and worked from the year 1200 to the present time.
