TextbookX.com Launches Pilot Program to Connect National Marketplace with College Booklists

Business Wire (August 16, 2006) Akademos, Inc., which operates the popular TextbookX.com marketplace, has announced that it is launching an unprecedented program that will allow students not only to shop from a peer-to-peer national marketplace, but to do so by searching their college course booklists. The TextbookX.com marketplace, with hundreds of thousands of registered users and millions of books in its inventory, provides more than 50% savings on average off textbook list prices; now students at twenty selected universities can save while searching for books by their class or professor.

"The new program brings together, for the first time, the local information that students need to make book purchases accurately and a vast national marketplace of buyers and sellers that will also make these purchases more affordable." said Brian Jacobs, a former professor who founded Akademos.

Given the confusion over the many published editions of a single textbook and identical book titles, students are sometimes bewildered when purchasing their textbooks online. The pilot program websites tackle this problem by giving students an accurate list of required and optional textbooks. "Students no longer need to worry that the discounted books they buy may not correspond to the required textbook," explains Jacobs.

Akademos developed this program to address the problem of escalating textbook costs that has burdened students nationwide. According to a recent report from the Congressional General Accounting Office, textbook prices rose at more than twice the rate of inflation between the mid-1980s and 2004. It is estimated that the average undergraduate now spends more than $800 a year for textbooks.
