Georgetown University Student Wins Top Prize in National Essay Contest
Business Wire (January 24, 2006) - Norwalk, CT (January 5, 2006)—Wesley Jenkins, a freshman at Georgetown University, has won the first place prize in TextbookX.com’s Fall 2005 scholarship contest. The essay contest, which was open to all undergraduate and graduate students studying in the US, required entrants to answer the question, “When, if ever, does a person have the right to end his or her own life?” while making use of a book that influenced their thinking on the issue. Wesley’s essay referenced Dalton Trumbo’s celebrated novel, Johnny Got His Gun, an influential study on the devastating psychological and physical effects of war.
TextbookX.com received thousands of submissions during the contest period, and Ms. Jenkins’ essay was one of three award winners. She will receive $2,000 towards her education, and her winning essay will be posted online at www.textbookx.com. Wesley, a native of Maryland, plans to pursue a career in government or the non-profit sector after graduation. Tristan Johnson, a doctoral student in philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin, and Kimberly Early, a senior majoring in writing at University of Wisconsin Whitewater were each awarded $250 TextbookX.com gift certificates as runners-up.
The editors of the Internationalist magazine, a student-oriented publication dedicated to encouraging discussion about global issues and ideas, joined TextbookX.com in selecting the winners for the Fall 2005 Contest. Internationalist content can be found online at www.textbookx.com/journal.php.
