Description: Any cell can be murdered by the application of some noxious treatment. These cells then die by necrosis, a passive process the involves disruption of membrane integrity, influx of calcium ions and water, and subsequently, cellular lysis (reviewed in Farber, 1990). In contrast, many cells die by a process that involves cellular condensation. In most cases, this occurs with the morphology of apoptosis, which is characterized by membrane blebbing, the deposition of electorn-dense chromatin along the inner margin of the nucleus, and the pinching-off of membrane-bound bodies (Kerr et al., 1972).
