Taken by the idea that if she could just act as if she believed then belief might follow, Donofrio travels to Mary sightings around the United States narrating a documentary for National Public Radio. Soon she is reciting Hail Marys, reads the Bible, attends church, and ends up on a pilgrimage to the Bosnian holy site, Medjugorje, with forty-nine rabidly devout Catholics. There Donofrio prays more rosaries in one week than she had in her entire childhood, witnesses a personal "miracle", then gets back on the bus to Italy to have her forehead touched with the bloody glove of the deceased stigmatist Padre Pio.
Back home Donofrio is different. Thought still not free from doubt, Donofrio does look for the good in the bad, tries to adopt an attitude of gratefulness, and to listen in the silence for the small voice of God. This is a conversion story but with a sense of humor, in which one heart healed, one soul grew,and one woman stumbled from the darkness and into the light.
