Description: This large format book includes over 35 theatrical posters, all but five of which were commissioned by the Lincoln Center Theater, New York. Full-page reproductions of each poster are accompanied by reference photos, sketches, and alternate versions, with an accompanying text describing a central aspect of the poster's creation. In some cases, the text focuses on how the artist found the visual metaphor for the play; in others, the graphic development of the poster is discussed. For the most part, however, the artist tells the stories of the people surrounding each production - playwrights, directors, actors, producers - and how the artist's interaction with them affected the final version of the poster. Being the Broadway theater, colorful personalities appear and enliven these accounts: Tom Stoppard, Wole Soyinka, Gregg Moser, John Guare, James Lapine, Liv Ullman, Jerry Zacks, Patty Lupone, Mike Nichols, and Wendy Wasserstein are among them.
