With more than 400 illustrations photographed by Geoff Spear in color and four-color black-and-white, from the original art and old strips -- including the 1950-52 strips from the collection of Chris Ware never before reproduced -- this book gives you the feeling of holding the actual drawings in your hand. In addition to the strips, there is fascinating art being seen for the first time: Schulz's high school doodles, his own private scrapbook of his "Lil' Folks" strips which preceded "Peanuts" to the first developmental sketches for Charlie Brown and the gang, and rare memorablia. With the earliest strips, we see how the original characters Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Shermy and Patty started out; Lucy was more "doll-like" in Schulz's own words when she was introduced in 1952 and Snoopy had not yet become a leading character who walked on two feet. In the studio in Santa Rosa, Spear was also able to photograph the last drawings found on Schulz's drafting board as well as his pens and brushes which had been left undisturbed.
This is a book that will look like no other celebration of "Peanuts" and shoulddelight Schulz's estimated 170 million fans.
