One day in April 1951, just before her 13th birthday, Dani decides to run away. She'll either get enough money for a bus ticket or she'll hitch a ride in the back of a flatbed truck. But before she can get anywhere, 9-year-old Stormy gets wind of her plan and decides he's going, too. After an encounter with a frightening truck driver Dani decides hitching is out -- she'll just have to come up with money for two bus tickets.
Dani and Stormy are busy with money-making schemes when a new girl moves into town. Pixie is the strangest girl -- and the biggest liar -- Dani has ever met, but she's also rich. When she decides to join the runaways they get the money they need. Now they each must face what running away will mean -- and why they're really doing it.
