The Three Stooges invented the rules of comedy, but they learned the rules of show business the hard way. Signed by Columbia Pictures in 1934, they made nine short films a year until 1958, when Columbia declined to renew their yearly contract and booted these pioneering pie-throwing professionals, who'd never gotten a raise, unceremoniously off the lot. Fortunately, their career was revived when their short films began to be shown on television, but they were never paid a cent beyond what they'd originally gotten for twenty-four years of beating the hell out of one another.

From humble vaudeville origins to movie stars to grainy black-and-white television legends, the Three Stooges are comedy icons, whose enduring appeal and slapstick legacy have made them the most famous comedy troupe in the world.
