Description:
Myths abound regarding the sexuality of women who were incestuously abused as children, for example, that they are promiscuous or incapable of sexual desire, that they are likely to choose a lesbian lifestyle, or that they often become prostitutes. But what is the reality? And how can therapists help incest survivors experience healthy sexuality? This book presents a groundbreaking research study on the sexual attitudes and practices of women with incest histories, including both statistical and anecdotal findings. It covers sexuality in the broadest sense of the word, including body perception, reproduction, sexual preference, sexual "lifestyle", and sexual functioning. Much of the book is descriptive, relying on illustrative quotes from the study participants. Ten women, falling into three self-described groups of "lucky", "uncomfortable", and "damaged" women, are discussed in depth. From, the questionnaire responses and the intensive interviews, the author draws some conclusions about circumstances and attitudes that have made a difference in the women's sexual adjustment. She then offers treatment recommendations to enhance sexuality and improve sexual functioning. These recommendations cover cognitive, behavioral, physical, and educational treatment methods and include both therapeutic strategies and self-help exercises. Among other items included in the appendices is the authors extensive questionnaire, which is likely to stimulate more research on women's sexuality after childhood incest, to encourage clinicians to ask survivors about their sexual attitudes and behaviors, and to guide women themselves as they evaluate their sexuality. This book challenges the myths andstereotypes that surround women with incest histories and their sexuality. However, it goes far beyond that to present the reality of their lives--often in their own words--and to make cogent clinical recommendations.
