The children soon grow to love Stephen, and he is equally captivated by them. But he is stunned by his feelings for Hayley. When the time comes for him to depart, Stephen gives in to the desire that has been consuming him for weeks. After a night of passion he walks out of Hayley's life, truly believing that she is better off without him. Both are miserable, until fate (and Stephen's sister) intervene to bring Hayley to London and back into Stephen's arms.
