Description:
From 1769 to 1823, Spanish missionaries came to California in the name of their monarchy and the Catholic church to colonize the area and convert the many Indian groups who lived there. Although the friars were ultimately unsuccessful, many of the distinctive (and beautiful) adobe missions that they designed, constructed, and built communities around still stand today.
