Closely involved with great art from an early age, Pierre Matisse moved from France to New York in his mid-20s to establish a gallery. For many years, he had the exclusive representation of such major European artists as Miro, Giacometti, Balthus, and Dubuffet in the United States.
Russell has created a seamless narrative based on exclusive access to Pierre Matisse's vast unpublished archives. At the book's core are 30 years of near-daily letters between father and son, in which virtually no subject, personal or professional -- including Henri Matisse's work, often illustrated in pencil -- was left untouched. Russell draws too on Pierre Matisse's voluminous correspondence with the artists he represented.
Matisse: Father & Son offers an inside look at the lives and creative efforts of some of the century's most important artists, as told by one of today's most respected writers on art.
