This book provides an ethnographic and historical analysis of the dynamics of class and culture in Tiraque, a province in the highlands of Cochabamba, Bolivia; it focuses on the changing conditions of production that give rise to and shape class relations and traces the formation of a landowning peasantry, a process that began in the 1800s and accelerated after the revolution of 1952, and the emergence of a rural class of merchants and transporters who extract surplus from the peasantry by a combination of alliances in production and reliance on traditional practices to consolidate its hold over production, the same cultural practices the peasants have used in an attempt to maintain a certain degree of autonomy from control by the merchants (red & white pictorial cover with photo of a Bolivian woman with child tending sheep in Tiraque, slight corner crease, otherwise a bright, clean, tight copy)
