Left-Leaning Alabama History
220 pages. Illustrated. This is an effort to downplay and pooh-pooh the corruption and crimes of the Radical Republicans in Alabama from 1865 through 1881. A critic of of the scalawags from the Tuscaloosa Independent Monitor in 1868 wrote the following: "Our scalawag is the local leper of the community. Unlike the carpetbagger, he is native, which is so much worse. Once he was respected in his circle, his head was level, and he could look his neighbor in the eye. Now...he is a mangy dog, slinking through alleys, haunting the Governor's office, defiling with tobacco juice the steps of the Capitol, stretching his lazy carcass in the sun on the Square."
