Libby Beaman appeared to be a proper Victorian lady, but her private diaries reveal the stubborn strengths which propelled her and her husband on a perilous journey to the remote Alaskan Pribilofs. Here the two were forced to live in a small cabin with her husband's powerful superior officer. All around this unwilling triangle the raw life -- punctuated by the cries of mating seals -- released animal passions, passions which threatened Libby's conventional marriage, and, ultimately, her life.
Not only is Libby's story a remarkable find, but her accompanying drawings, done while she was in the Alaskan Pribilofs, are exquisite.
