Probably the most significant change in the history of electrically driven mass-transit vehicles has been the disappearance of public transit systems owned by electric public utility companies. Most of the early trolley buses were modifications of internal-combustion-propelled, rubber-tired vehicles. Propulsion by direct current motors was the incorporation of a very practical and understandable power source for conversion, distribution, and ultimate controls by known and established technology in the form of direct current. The application of 600 or 750 Volts Direct Current was shared by the use of this same power in many downtown office buildings and industrial facilities for elevators, cranes, and other electrical applications. One of the greatest impediments to the development of better Electric Trolley Bus (ETB) products has been the objection in local political circles to the aesthetic perception of the overhead-wire power-distribution systems. Requests for the retention and expansion of existing electric systems continued to decline over the period. The advantages of ETB operations in the form of quiet performance, sufficient power for gradient (hilly) operations, and environmentally desirable characteristics have been far overwhelmed these objections. Despite the apparent lack of great public interest in ETB technology, the lingering nostalgia, and loyal support of trolley bus fans, there are still significant interests in such cities as San Francisco, Seattle, Dayton-Boston, and Philadelphia. Perhaps the impacts of energy conservation, environmental considerations, and support by city planners will continue to provide sufficient pressure to encourage and increase the use of electric trolley buses in future transportation plans.
