Description: Large firms have become far too complicated. They are being strangled by their own management processes. Big business is not too big in terms of revenues, but it is too complex. It has far too many products, divisions and functions, and way too many managers. The good news is that it is now possible to manage without management as a separate activity or set of jobs. Six ever more powerful forces can be mobilised to dispense with management - power from customers, information, investors, global markets, simplicity and leaders. The authors see the emergence of a totally different 21st century supercorporation, with no headquarters, standardised operations throughout the globe, and very simple structures. The supercorporation will be controlled by customers and information technology and a new breed of superleaders, not by managers. The supercorporations will create enormous wealth, but offer far fewer jobs. In the transition, unemployment and inequality could soar well beyond today's levels. Unless the transition is handled in ways few are yet thinking about, the next few decades will be ones of horrendous social disruption. Managing the transition to a world without management will pose the biggest challenge of all.
