Description:
During the summer of 1997, Kurt Caviezel photographed through his window, capturing drivers and passengers stopped at the red traffic light outside his apartment on a busy Zurich intersection. Shot through a 1000 mm telephoto lens, double-glazed widowpane and curved car windshield, Caviezel's photographs are subjected to distorted and reflected rays of light, giving the images a certain atmospheric distance and detached perspective, and emphasizing the interior details of the car and the behavior of its occupants. Organized into different categories -- displays of affection, eating, exasperation, strange objects in the front seat, inspecting one's body -- these images capture the portions of our lives played out in car seats, and the strange behaviors we have developed to pass the time in transit from point a to point b.
