Description: Eleven-year-old Margo Bandini has never been afraid of anything. Her life on Maple Avenue in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, with Mama and Papa and her little brother Charlie, has always seemed secure. But it's 1933 and the Great Depression is changing things for families all across America. Margo's family is not poor. Papa still works repairing shoes -- although he's more likely to get paid in fruit and vegetables than in money.

In school, Margo is learning about the causes of the Depression. She admires Eleanor Roosevelt, who is known as Eleanor Everywhere for her travels to help people all over the country. Then one day the impossible happens: Papa cannot make the payments to the bank, and the Sheriff Sale sign goes up on their door. They have two weeks to pay, or they must leave Maple Avenue forever.

Margo knows she must find help somewhere. When she's given a school assignment to write to a person she admires, she thinks of Eleanor Roosevelt. Maybe there's a chance -- just a chance -- that Mrs. Roosevelt can help her family, too.
