Description:
Josephine Margaret Butler ("Jos") is the second oldest child in a large, poor family living in Summit, Kentucky in 1963. When her mother retreats inside herself after a miscarriage, Jos and her sister Ellie must run the household, caring for their siblings and for their belligerent, rage-filled father. In the coming year, Jos will act on her secret passion for women, while race relations and the escalation of the war in Vietnam tear at the fabric of her town and her country. Trapped in a stifling family dynamic and a small town resisting the era's sweeping changes, Jos must use her only asset -- her intellect -- as a means of escape.
