Description: On July 4, 1826, the United States celebrated its 50th birthday with parades and speeches all across the nation. But the most extraordinary events of the day were the almost simultaneous deaths of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, the last pillars of the original republic. It was a moment that manifested a remarkable transition in our nation's history -- from the post-Revolutionary spirit of nostalgia to a quest for redefinition within the boundaries of the founders' ideals.

Drawing on private diaries and letters, as well as newspapers and other publications, Andrew Burstein gives us a sweeping yet intimate picture of the United States in its jubilee year. We meet the country's ordinary men and women, and its headline-makers -- among them the notoriously hot-tempered Andrew Jackson and the Marquis de Lafayette, the only surviving general of the Revolutionary War. We visit an Ohio boomtown on the edge of the "new West", where the recently built Erie Canal has opened the way to America's commercialism. We see the curmudgeonly president, John Quincy Adams, in his dealings with a contentious Congress. We watch a nation romanticizing its glorious past, and setting an anxious eye on the future.

America's Jubilee is an enthralling work of history: a vivid picture of a nation romanticizing its glorious past, and setting an anxious and eager eye on the future.
