The character of Avram Cohen is revealed here as never before: a deeply complex man with a difficult past trying hard to be moral in a world where greed rules. As The New York Times Book Review observed: "Having created a highly intelligent detective to handle the brainwork in this series, Mr. Rosenberg does not waste that shrewd and subtle mind".
