An Affair of Honor
- Binding: Hardcover
- Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf
- Publish date: 09/01/2001
The killer is Hope Kirby, an admired World War II veteran and a member of a large clan of mountain farmers, whose wife has been stepping out on him with a local dandy. Although Kirby's code of honor requires that he exact vengeance for his wife's behavior, it won't let him kill an innocent bystander, and Charles goes free, promising not to tell what he's seen.
But Charles does tell, causing the town to choose sides and the two men to examine their two ways of looking at things -- fundamentalist Christian and the code of the hills -- and as the drama plays itself out, Charles, the Kirbys, and the entire town are changed forever.
