Description:
For nearly a century the inhabitants of Halley's Landing, named because legend says Halley's Comet landed there, have hosted the Midwest's largest August 8th celebration, commemorating the signing of the Emancipation Proclaimation. The townspeople turn out in full force for the celebration, and people from around the country, white and black folk, flock to Halley's Landing. This is the backdrop for a rich, moving story that weaves together the lives and voices of Dawn Trice's vividly rendered characters: strong-willed Flossie, who came to Halley years ago and stayed after her husband left and her daughter Sweet Alma departed in scandal; Thelma, Flossie's sister in law, who has reared nine boys with her beloved husband Herbert; Pepper, Thelma's son, who is dealing with the unplanned pregnancy of his girlfriend; Aunt Cora, the town matriarch, confidante and refuge; and May Ruth, an eccentric old white woman with a sad secret. All these characters must deal with the sorrow of a tragic accident that shook their live, and this year, 1986, this sorrow threatens to overwhelm them. These are ordinary people who have demons and ghosts to face, and their struggle and salvation shine forth in Dawn's luminous prose.
